Be Creative.

In 2020 while also dealing with the pandemic, I dealt with a serious health crisis. If you’ve ever been through one of your own, you know that it forces you into a period of self-evaluation. During my moments of reflection, I realized that I had allowed my life to get out of balance. I have always enjoyed creative activities. As a child and young adult, I had plenty of time available to engage in them. As life went on and became more complicated, though, the built-in free time was no longer there, and I was not good at regularly carving out time for it. I was so bogged down with work, school, and household tasks that all I wanted to do whenever I had a free moment was turn my brain off and veg out in front of the TV. My health struggle reminded me that while work and school and maintaining my home were important, they were not the only important things.

Interestingly, I was also working on my psychology degree while these life events were happening. One thing that stuck out to me in my studies was the theory that participating in creative activities seems to have both psychological and biological health benefits. It’s theorized that being creative can improve mood, boost the immune system, and reduce stress. Plus it’s just fun. And the good news is that you don’t have to be good at it to reap the benefits.
